Six compete for the title of Kate Johnston


Alexandria Bay--- The long awaited Pirate Days are right around the corner, so to speak (Aug. 8-17) and six young women currently are competing for the title of Kate Johnston, daughter of the St. Lawrence River pirate Bill Johnston of the ill-fated Patriots War of the mid-19th century.


Each contestant is raising funds for the Alexandria Township Historical Societyʼs restoration project at the Cornwall Brothers Store on the waterfront. Each dollar raised for the Historical Society by the contestant will be worth one vote. The contestant with the most votes by the deadline of noon Aug. 4 will be this yearʼs Kate Johnston in the weekʼs festivities.


Participants include:


-- Jordan Barber, sponsored by Downtown at 11 James, is a native of Alexandria Bay. She is a 2008 graduate of Alexandria Central School who will be attending SUNY Canton in the fall. Jordan was a member of the ACS Dance Team and choir; she also enjoys playing soccer and hockey.


-- Nikki Hardy is a native of Gouverneur who recently relocated to Alexandria Bay. Sponsored by Walton Street Market, she is a graduate of Le Moyne College with a B.S. in Business Administration. Nikki enjoys spending time with her friends and family and especially her nephew Aidan.


--Judy Hess, sponsored by Good Dog Charlieʼs, is an Alexandria Bay native. Judy graduated from Alexandria Central in June and will be attending Jefferson Community College in the fall. She enjoys reading and boating.


-- Megan Keenan, represents Treasure Island Jewelers, and is a graduate of Immaculate Heart Central School. She will be attending SUNY Potsdam in the fall and enjoys boating, skiing, and traveling.


-- Carly Lauraine is a 2008 graduate of Thousand Islands Central School. Sponsored by Two Friends and A River Catering, she is also a lifeguard Alexandria Bayʼs Scenic View Park beach. Carly will be attending SUNY Oneonta in the fall majoring in dietetics.


--Sabrina Sochia, represents The Magical Swan. She is a native of Alexandria Bay and will be a senior at Alexandria Central School in the fall. Sabrina has played varsity soccer and softball and enjoys spending time on the St. Lawrence River with her friends.


The winner of the contest will receive 25 percent of what she personally raises in the form of a scholarship. This years Kate Johnston will be reining over the weeks activities which include the pirate invasion and parade. Runners-up will also be welcome to take part.
