This was submitted to the site today by Ron Thomson and I totally agree that something like this should not be allowed to continue.

This sheen extended all the way to the castle yesterday...

"The wreck of the Roy A. Jodrey (located next the U.S. Coast Guard station on Wellesley Island) has been leaking oil into the St. Lawrence River for years. Yesterday was one of the worst days in recent memory. There was a sheen that extends all the way from the Coast Guard station to Boldt Castle. It should not be allowed to continue. This picture was taken yesterday afternoon just downriver from the Coast Guard station. This is the type of sheen that extends all the way to the castle."

For more information on this wreck check out this site. Click on the picture below.

This link has some really good information on how the ship sank and how some of the initial salvage efforts failed and a diver was lost.

Below are comments Mike Williams sent me regarding this.

The question someone should be asking; is how much oil is still on the Roy A. Jodrey and is there any chance of a major leak due to deterioration.  These are the same issues with the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor.

See link below.

And the story below as well...

As of 2007, 66 years after the explosion that destroyed Arizona, oil leaks from the hull still rise to the surface of the water. The USS Arizona continues to leak about a quart of oil per day into the harbor. Survivors from the crew say that the oil will continue to leak until the last survivor dies. Many of the survivors have arranged for their ashes to be placed in the ship, among their fallen comrades, upon their death and cremation. The Navy, in conjunction with the National Park Service, has recently overseen a comprehensive computerized mapping of the hull, being careful to honor its role as a war grave. The Navy is considering non-intrusive means of abating the continued leakage of oil to avoid the further environmental degradation of the harbor. This abatement may very well occur when the last surviving crewmember dies.

Something really should be done. The river is the heart and soul of this community. It is the draw that brings people here that spend the money that gives us an income. If it's destroyed so our we.

It has went on all these years and still nothing has been done to solve the oil being discharged, what will it take. Tourism is that backbone of the area, so why not have all tourist sign a petition?

I will be calling sometime this week. Seems like a no-brainer once you look at the facts and how long that vessel has been leaking oil. Were not talking about a little bit here either. If you care about the river you will call too. It can't hurt.

If you or I pumped our bilge every day and introduced that into the St. Lawrence River, there would be a consequence. The sinking of the Jodrey was a tragedy. The owners of the ship have an obligation to abide by the laws of NYS and the USA when it comes to polluting one of the most incredible rivers in our entire country. It is a matter of spending enough money to rid the vessel of any remaining hazards. You or I would be forced to, why not the ones responsible for this ship?

The best way to get the attention of people who can do something about this is to call the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802. Please just politely report that the Roy A. Jodrey continues to leak oil into the St. Lawrence River. They will ask for your name and other information but you are allowed to report anonymously. If you are not comfortable giving your name, tell them your name is not important but oil being discharged into the St. Lawrence from a known source is.
