Injured Amish Horse Found Lying in Street

"I arrived downtown around 4pm to do some shopping and saw the horse laying on the ground on Miller ave, near the sidewalk next to Treasure Island. Initially I couldn't tell if it was alive or dead, but after I parked it had its head up.  The State Police were on site. I approached them and asked if they needed a horse trailer. I saw Amish John, and re-introduced myself as Glenn Hudon's daughter, whom he knows, and asked if he wanted me to go get the horse trailer. He and the police did, so I headed to the Farm to get Dads truck and trailor. I recruited my husband John to help ("but I'm watching the SU game!"). When we arrived back into town, the Vet (Anderson?) from Burrville was there and administering medications to the horse who was still laying down. I noticed David VanBrocklin, Critter, and Bobby Service, and a bunch of other agencies, including an ambulance.

While waiting I talked to Amish John who said he was coming down Miller Ave to go to his spot by the Magical Swan, and he pulled the brakes on the buggy, while going down the hill, and the horse slipped and fell. His leg was underneath him at an angle that was difficult for him to get his feet under him again.



By this time, the horse was trying to get up by himself, and although there was much conversation about backhoes and ropes to pull him upright, with a little assistance from some strong men in the crowd, they were able to get the horse on his feet. He looked happy to be up off the ground. We loaded him into the trailer and Corrinne Thompson drove John and his family and we went to Johns house on the far side of Lafargeville. We picked up a horse to bring back so John could get his buggy home. In the process of the horse transfer, John forgot the collar the horse needs to pull the buggy. I went back to our farm and miraculously found one in our barn to give to him.

This was a traumatic event for the horse and Johns children, but all worked out fine in the end. The vet recommended a day or two of rest for the horse and the state police followed John out of town since it was dark by the time he was set to go.

I was happy that I came upon this situation just after it happened and was able to help out John and the horse.
It was a good outcome!
