How cool is this.. An Alexandria Bay, NY room key from the early 1900's. This picture was sent in to the site today by a guy by the name of Steven Goose.

Back in the area's Heyday The Thousand Island House in Alexandria Bay was one of the largest Hotels on the Saint Lawrence River.. It opened in 1909.. possibly sooner, but it might have burned to the ground much like many other large Hotels on the River did... or possibly been torn down... one or the other.. Perhaps a historian or two would be so kind as to leave a comment below with more details.

I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE SEEN THIS PLACE IN PERSON, (TIME MACHINE ANYONE?)

UPDATE 4:20 PM: I found this bit of info on the River Hospital web page..
http://www.riverhospital.org/about.php

"River Hospital is located on the former site of the Thousand Islands House, once a premier resort hotel built in 1872 by Colonel O.G. Staples. The structure was four stories high, and would accommodate 700 guests. Many notable people stayed at the hotel during its heyday, including industrialist Andrew Carnegie, writer Mark Twain, and statesman Henry Cabot Lodge. By the 1930's, during the Great Depression, the hotel was abandoned and the property was sold in 1935 to Mr. Abe Cooper of Syracuse, who razed the structure. The site was sold to the Edward John Noble Foundation Inc. in 1946 for construction of the new hospital."

UPDATE 4-5-2011: The town of Alexandria historian Greta Slate sent in this bit of information..

"The main building was 276 ' ft long and 66' ft wide. The eastern portion is five stories high and the western portion four stories, do to the building built on uneven rock. The center of the main part A Wing of the same height and 40' ft wide extends back 100' ft. A tower 24' by 27' ft rises 160'ft above the foundation. The hotel will accomodate 500 guests. One of the biggest features was the wide veranda where the rocking chairs were arranged for guests to use from morning until night. The hotel of architectual beauty of by gone days was bought by Abe Cooper in 1936. "
