At about 1:06 AM today the server that runs abaynews.com shit the bed. The secondary hard drive where I run the server virtually started to produce (cyclic redundancy check) errors and things got to the point where the virtual server wouldn't even run. The fact that the web site has been so busy lately was definetly a factor due to to extra stress to the drive.

Anyway.. I went in remotely and restored a VMWare backup from Nov 20th, 2010 to a different physical drive on the server. I was then able to mount the dying Vmware on the bad drive and get enough recent web site content to put humpy dumpty back together again. It was still giving read errors every so often, but I got what I needed.

Botton line... we're back in business with very little data loss... u folks probably won't notice anything missing. I lost some stats and a few other misc things that I could get back if I really felt like spending the time but it's nothing major so I don't care if I lose the data.. Actually .. everything is running a lot faster now probably due to it all being on a hard drive that isn't on it's way to the boneyard..

I'd like to thank my Genius buddy Randy Pierce for convincing me to run my servers virtually on VMWare about 4-5 years back. It really made restoring things a breeze. This would have been a nightmare otherwise.. Of course it's also a good thing that I had a complete backup sitting on a network backup drive provided by my datacenter that wasn't too old. I need to start making backups more often..

I guess I 'll call the Data Center in DC tomorrow and see about getting a new secondary drive put in the server.. Then I can move the VMWare back to the secondary drive again..

So... it's almost 5 am.. I'm going to sleep now.. I guess I'm back on the Vampire schedule again.. ***k me sideways...
