I figured I would take pictures and document this..

It all started one day earlier this month when I finally went to the Dentist after 11 years of not going. Now, I am thinking I must have at least 4-6 cavities and what not so I saved up a ton of money for the visit. Turns out I had no cavities and my teeth looked really good.

With one exception: Tooth 11 which is an Upper Canine Tooth is still a Baby Tooth with nothing underneath it. No permanent tooth and nobody really knows why. It is something that just happens sometimes. I was told you usually inherit the condition from your parents, but in not in my case.

Here is the picture. You can notice the messed up looking tooth pretty easily. What I really didn't like is that food would tend to get caught in that spot on the side.

Now, though there really wasn't a big problem with the tooth except that the tip broke off it, a spot was missing near the gums, it got loose one or twice before, and it looked like shit. Still, I asked the Dentist for some options and in my head I wanted something that would hopefully last forever. He said how about a nice Titanium Implant? Of course being the high tech guy that I am I was hooked when he mentioned the word Titanium. Another possibility is that I am I am just an idiot and needed to spend my saved up money on something.

This is a picture of what an implant looks like.

Anyway, a couple weeks later I get an appointment in Fayettville with the Periodontist. He's basically your high tech super dentist who specializes in all sorts of crazy shit. He explains to me what we are gonna do and says let's do it now. I say sure, why not. This was at 9 AM in the morning BTW.

So, here is basically what happened.

  • He takes an XRAY or whatever.
  • He sticks Novocain in 3 spots or so with a needle.
  • He takes out the Baby Tooth out with various tools. Apparently when you are doing something like this it is best to take it out very carefully. He didn't have much trouble and it was out in a couple minutes.
  • He preps the jaw area with various tools to get it how he wants it. This includes some sort of bone graph and I am pretty sure there was some chiseling involved. I really don't know for sure as I didn't ask questions and I told him he didn't need to tell me what he was doing.
  • He then starts drilling into my upper jaw with various drill bits being careful not to let the bone he is drilling into get too hot. That felt pretty odd.
  • He screws in this specially treated titanium screw and ultimately tightens it to torque with some sort of socket. I think? I could hear it and feel it as it got tighter, but my eyes were closed.
  • He then tightens my loose gums together about as tight as possible with sutures. That felt really weird.

It actually didn't hurt much and everyone at this office was friendly and easy to talk to. I actually had fun and I was never nervous once. I was the perfect patient. Yeah, I am am weird. The whole visit took like 45 minutes max and I was outta there. Here are the after pictures. I get to be toothless for like 5 months while the titanium and bone fuse together. The regular dentist can make me a tooth and basically screw it in to the implant. It is good for 400lbs of chewing pressure. WOO HOO !! I'll take more pictures as time goes on until I finally get the tooth in. In the meantime I may be spending some time in the Redwood Area. Just Kidding!! Actually, if I want I can get some sort of temporary tooth in a few weeks.

I can take advil if I want but it only hurts when I touch the area and its not swollen so I dont see why I should bother. I have to take antibiotics for a while to reduce the chance of any infection so I guess I might not be partying tonight with everyone. That, and the fact that I am extremely broke at the moment after doing this. LOL.. I am also getting sick from a cold which sucks. Figures that would happen the day before I get something like this done.

Now, doesn't that look comfortable? In some ways I am not sure why I did this because it was really expensive, but in the end it's probably a good idea and I probably would have just spent the money one something stupid. If you really think about your teeth are something you use every day for the rest of your life and by the sounds of it I'll never need anything major done to my teeth again unless I get in fight or an accident some day.
